G'day guys
I want to change the coolant in my 2003 2.8l CRD. I understand the system holds 12.5l. The handbook says to use a minimum solution of 50% recommended HOAT ethylene glycol coolant in water. I bought a litre of 'Tectaloy Gold' which is concentrated and treats up to 15l. According to the blurb it is suitable for modern cooling systems in both petrol or diesel engines. It says it contains 280g/litre of ethylene glycol but is that sufficient to meet the recommended 50% requirement? i.e. how many g/litre is a 50% solution. Other products on the shelf have different concentrates of g/litre.
My second query is can I just use gravity to drain the system or do you need some sort of pressure device to push the fluid out? Also are there any tricks when refilling with the new product? I was talking to someone about this and he said you can get air pockets which can cause the fluid to stop flowing and cook your engine? I am trying to source a service manual but can't find one for the diesel using the info on the threads. I am going to post that question again. Would appreciate any advice please.

Mobil??? I don't think so. It is all Penzoil here in NZ and that is what Chrysler have been having rebadged for years. Thye have stopped rebadging most of the products now and when the dealers order the various fluids from Chrysler they get mostly non Mopar badged product with a small Mopar sticker on it.

Whatever brand you go for, make sure wherever possible you dont mix coolants, unless its a breakdown or remote situation where you dont have a choice. Its the same for all oils etc but there is a big unknown when you mix all those chemicals and I have seen them turn to sludge on engines a hell of a lot bigger than the jeep. For top ups distilled water is preferable, but tap water is fine (depending where you live!!). And when you change brands or types of coolants make sure its flushed properly.

Just read the service manual for a 3.7 petrol engine. (Should be very similar)

Quote:

CAUTION: Failure to purge air from the cooling system can result in an overheating condition and severe engine damage.

NOTE: The engine cooling system will push any remaining air into the coolant bottle within about an hour of normal driving. As a result, a drop in coolant level in the pressure bottle may occur.
