I'm pleased it's Mk 1, it usually takes me till MkVI to get it right

Ok im thinking it just has air in it, still.
Ran it for over an hour at idle in the driveway, didnt go over 90ish with the cap off
Turn off the engine and coolant sprays out the filler neck
Dont know why this xj is so bloody hard to bleed ffs

And what happens when you squeeze the top hose when its running & what temp thermostat you using? When the cap ison what happens then, does it help bleed the air out to overflow tank?
I'd be a bit worried as you know the temp sensor doesn't read the correct temp when it's not in water or maybe your Rad is super efficient

RB, I run mine up on car ramps facing uphill if possible, leave it idle & squeeze top hose a bit. By the time you drink a can it should have all the air out. I think a 3mm bleed hole at the top of thermostat helps too. Will put 1 of those temp gauge adaptors in top hose & use the bung facing up to try & get all air out of top hose when I put the new hoses on. Better get some more cans for that job too. Regards oldon.

RB, I had trouble with an EF Falcon 6 doing that once, eventually found thermostat gasket had a very slight leak letting a little air in. Took a lot of rum & cola cans to find it, simple things get you sometimes. Regards oldon.
