I'm installing a transmission temperature gauge. To get access to the rubber bung on the right (driver's) side, I pulled out the coolant header tank - all the while thinking to myself, "This is going too far. There has to be another way."

I'm now very glad I have been so fussy. As you can see from the picture, there's a bunch of bare wires just waiting to arc together. My installation job just doubled in size!

This is what I meant by going too far - half the dash out.

Has some critter been chewing in there?
How are you going to fix it without replacing half the loom?
Always hard to balance between just doing a rough patch up or getting carried away with all new.
Anyhow, it is better you found it now than with flames and smoke at the worst possible time and place!!

The damage is from two bundles of wires crossing over each other and rubbing over time. I posted this as a warning to other WJ owners to check the wiring behind the header tank. The tank comes out easily with only two 10mm bolts - and you can move it enough to check behind it without removing any hoses (i.e. not spilling coolant).

I'm going to fix it by wrapping the bared wires in amalgam tape, putting split conduit over each of the bundles and inserting a cut piece of 3mm rubber sheet between them. These are all things I have taking up space in my garage, so it it only time for me.

Job done. Note the weeping from the sensor. This highlights the importance of checking your work. I always say, "Not checking your work is the highest arrogance - it assumes that you never make mistakes." A few more turns on the hose clamps seems to have solved the weep.

I'm not sure if I want the gauge where it currently is mounted. It obscures the handbrake light.

Changed transfer case and gearbox oils today. Interestingly when I drained the gearbox, I only got a little over 3 litres out. Damn the previous mechanic who couldn't have filled it correctly! Oh, wait!!

This might explain the elevated gearbox temperatures.
