It is recommended to use DEX III compatible ATF (since the Dex/Merc III is not available). I wouldn't put synthetic ATF/Dex IV etc in the AW4, the wrong fluid can cause all kinds of trans issues...
Just do a forward flush and be done with this job for the next 50K. Happy to provide the write-up for it.

Q: I noticed that my oil pressure gauge is hardly fluctuating. Driving it always sits close to the mark past midscale. At idle it maybe moves to just under midscale but going back up to where it was when accelerating again.. I think this is fine, but just wondering since reading up on fluctuating pressures on another Xj site...mine has never really done that. 10W-30 or 10W-40 as now. WIX filter. Hot or cold.

thx for the replies, yes 8 litres is dry refill as per manual, 3 litres from pan, better than nothing atm.

a pointer to forward flush will be welcome, I am open to Dex 3 only if that is the consensus

If 4LO activates a "held in 1st" function, that would be good, and make sense, will probably be off-road, on a VERY steep road tomorrow, so will check

regarding suspect oil pressure readings, one good thing I did on another vehicle plagued by notoriously dodgy senders, was tee in an additional Evo digital oil pressure gauge/sender for $40, amazingly accurate and simple, (and cheap)

As my vehicle has over 300k, I am considering using synthetic oil, my mate said these bottom ends were good as bullet-proof, up to about 450k, except he said (I think) the conrod big-ends were the weak point?

He has rebuilt a large number of engines, including a 10yr stint with a major engine rebuilding firm

Well, Dex III is the recommended ATF where Dex/Mercon III isn't available (Aus)

It was leaking fluid, if fluid can get out my concern was water might get in when I'm on the OTT....

Replaced the 5/8 fuel line to the auxiliary fuel tank thanks to the help of a local truck parts supplier as it is an unusual size for regular auto stores.
