Jeep Nerd Q bro;

did you notice one of the (AT) pipes was prominently half-crushed, like someone took a chisel and wacked it?..almost restrict flow

also both pipes were creased and dinted.

to make the pipes look like that must have been part of some manafacturing process then?..weird

Have also read on forum that 2.5" exhaust is an "upgrade"..so apart from fitting extractors, is an alternative pipe available to replace that 1st section of 2" pipe...I must confess no real interest in high rpm power, only good torque <4000 (in these vehicles)

95FSM 1) drain ATF, 2) drop pan, 3) change filter

me..drop skid plate, crossmember, trans mount, T-mount plate!...even then had to jam it very hard to squeeze between valve body and 2.5" exhaust pipe.

furthermore, it was not possible to split the dipstick tube in situ, had to be taken out whole...ended up having to clamp lower tube in a vice, and work the upper section with so much force, that breaking off the lower tube from sump in situ with no helper was my valid concern

noticed the 2 small crossover pipes to the valve body were very battered, which was puzzling, either the sump has taken a smashing hit & been replaced, or someone has removed them with brutal stupidity, presumably for OH work (has over 300k)

2 hour job turned into about 6 hours
2.5" is not standard....

The dipstick tube is two piece, the join is just above the bend (pre-updates at least), this is a tight joint with an O-ring seal, it is removable by working it in a rotataing fashion whilst having tension on it.
I've not noticed any "damage" on the internal pipework on any I've seen...

For the dipstick tube I put rubber grease on the O-ring when assembling, then wrap silicone rescue tape around the joint to keep dirt out. Makes it easier to separate when dropping the pan.

I don't think dinged pipes are standard. I think the pipes get easily dinged by people trying to remove the pan with the exhaust in the way. I think the previous owners and mechanics cause it as the pan nearly clears so they try to maneuver it around and the pipes are quite soft and easily damaged.
Well both my cars exhausts are how you describe yours. I will take a pic tomorrow for comparison. Both my cars exhaust pipes look identical so I think it is factory.

thats a feasible explanation..there was me imagining a little Japanese man in the factory, twisting those little pipes just so..

My exhaust does not look aftermarket either, begs the question why you would have a 2.5" exhaust with that restrictive section at the front, unless clearance issues exist

If yours is a 96 as you have listed then it wouldn't have been 2.5" from the factory, they were only around 2" stock, I can't comment on the update models as I have only had pre-updates....
