The new ones have a ball fitting at both ends. I have been told there are two types.
Rusty, try the Gas Strut Guys on ebay, they have the correct struts for yours, $35, free post. Bought some a few years ago, still working properly no noise & they arrived the next day from ordering.

I had my original ones regassed at my house not long after I bought the Xj as beck then they were a little thin on the ground aftermarket, they are still working well, that was done in 2003!!

The guy pointed out that they were upside down and fitted them the correct way, the car was 8yrs old when we bought it which means they have lasted longer since the regas then they did from new so he was obviously onto something.....

According to the strut guy the body should be at the top so the oil inside keeps the seal moist, mine were upside down and couldn't keep the tailgate up, had to carry a broom handle everywhere....

For completeness : post-update struts. One ball, one swivel, one way to fit. These are after markets btw.

I did the same till I got the new ones. I'll have to change mine around, now I think of it, that's how the struts on wife's Focus are. That's makes me think of Repco struts I put on the Focus after the tailgate smacked her on the head. After putting a bullocky to shame with her language, I was told to get new ones now & put 'em on now or F---ing else|. First set from repco had so much pressure she couldn't close the tailgate, they replaced them no hassle, set on it now makes howling noise when opening or closing. Better get some more from The Gas Strut Guys like I said I would a while back, or I'll hear from the bullocky again. Repco about $90 on special, strut guys under $50.
