I saw a write up some time ago from the US that IIRC used Gorilla Glue. Can't find the thread with pics, but found one that describes the fix.

I looked on eBay there all different sizes .. sold separately so I will have to work out a combo but before I do that there is stables up the end of the street I might go ask if they have any old needles lying around it has to be big as glue is thick

If you drill 1/8" (3mm) holes in the rubber, as described in the post I linked, I think the nozzle of the gorilla glue bottles should fit snugly in the holes, without the need for a syringe or needles.

That's a lot easier ...
Keys arrived today ... and the bezel is in Brisbane so I will get it later this week ....
After I am finished here I am off to rockauto to redeem my discount code and get 2 ignitions .... more goodies to track
And get some Gorilla Glue

As a ‘back up’, there a steering on eBay (Australia) looks in pretty good condition, $110. Find the steering wheel on eBay and look at his other items. Appears he is wrecking a full XJ so a few other parts there as well.

I grabbed a couple of steering wheels with column for $50, one even has keys!

A good spare to have is the "multi-function switch"...(indicator stalk) as it controls everything on a XJ

I can tell you that stuff is good to have on really old vehicles, cause eventually the plastic (or bakelite on real old ones) gets brittle, and you are out of action
