By the time you've bought it, paid to fix the glaring errors that Toyota don't seem to care about (like auto transmissions and mismatched wheel track), added a canopy and then tweaked the motor (as Toyota deemed it OK charge a fortune for a V8 engine but didn't bother to tune it to allow any sort of decent output) then I would almost be in Dodge Ram territory. I would rather have the Ram if I was forking that much out. Way more luxury, way more comfortable, way more space, and over 1000Nm torque from an engine that'll do 1,000,000 miles with not much more than regular oil changes. Either way I couldn't afford that so went for the 200 instead. Not my ideal car by any means but it does everything I'll need from it. They also have great re-sale so at least I know I can get rid of it easily if I ever want to.

Fair comment. The 70 cruisers are starting to look like the end of the old 4x4's. Most of their sales are for mining, and they almost stopped but instead they upgraded the safety features on the 2 door ute which is the core model in the mining sector. Remains to be seen how long they continue. Not many new cars out there with a chassis any more. Nissan has turned the Pathfinder into monoque instead of chassis now, so another gone.
Still waiting for the JL before we decide. It will be a trip touring car. Needs a good diesel, room for extra fuel capacity and enough storage space. If that comes to pass then we have to toss up if we can put up with the Jeep service operators. There are some good independents in Australia but haven't found any in SA yet. The option is a 79 series Toyota. We drive manual, and the wheel track can be resolved cheaply or expensively. Not concerned about engine performance it can be easily improved with exhaust and chip. New models have better overdrive ratio, so at least that is resolved.
