bought my crd @holland park also - in August 03 - done 7770ks now. Towed a car on trailer to Leyburn and back - up Toowoomba range and down again - 400k round trip averaged 13.5l/100 - towing 1900kgs. This is much better than 80series cruiser I had from new. CRD Economy is brilliant - towing the rig to Indy and back ave 12l/100k, stop start in peak hour getting 10.5 to 11.5/100k. One "all highway" trip unladen returned 8l/100k. Take off incredibly superior to cruise. The vehicle was purchased mainly for towing and for offroading - the CRD tow rating of 3400kg odd swayed me the crd way - cruisers and patrols are too big for my particular needs - had both before but limitations brought about by being too large and too slow and too expensive to run meant I wasn't interested in them anymore.

Correction - The vehicle was purchased mainly for towing and NOT for offroading.
Got most of the serious offroading out of the system years ago when you could go a hell of a lot more places with virtually no yobbos around.

Do any of you other guys find the steering a little wandering at the "straight ahead" - this is one aspect a little dissappointing - anybody know of a fix for this

After jumping out of an XJ the steering feels just fine to me. However if concerned get your alignment checked. I have seen a few grands with too little toe-in from the factory. This causes wander/drift & tyre wear.
BTW welcome & hope to catch up sometime.

Hi David - thanks for your response. I've only just found this site and like what I see. The kids are usually on this machine chatting away so I don't know how often I'll get on. Do you have a CRD also?
I have seen the steering criticism appear in a magazine which seemed to claim the wandering was typical of the species. Thus I thought it might be more than just alignment (I assumed thy would have set that up properly at pre-delivery). I find it doesn't happen all the time. - and wondered whether some one might have found different camber/castor settings or any thing really.

Nah I've always been a petrol head & although the CRD did impress the hell out of me Albion did a killer deal on the V8. I figured that nearly $10,000 buys a lot of premium. As for the steering, they are not as precise as Prado or Pajero but O.K. once you get used to it. I gave up caring about journos opinions. They bitched about the Xj steering being too light & now bitch about the WJ being too heavy.
Its a personal choice & if you like it who cares about anyone else.
I am just about to replace a set of tyres on a customers 02 Laredo at 36,000 kms. These are worn to a typical toe out pattern on all 4. Car has apparently had tyre rotations but never an alignment. Camber & caster are not simply adjustable & require offset balljoints. Not sure if warranty would spring for these if needed.
