If it were in the door frame rather than in the door itself the sensor would become active when the doors were removed, you would therefore need an additional sensor to detect if the door were plugged in. With the sensor in the door itself it's simply disconnected when the door's unplugged.

Edit: Not sure how it works in a TJ :s

TJ doors are removable, easy to fix the sensor. Nothing special about JK doors being removable. The difference on a TJ is that no wires go to the door (locks are fully mechanical).

Fair enough. So how is it that a TJ detects the difference between an open and a removed door?

On the door jambs there are spring switches which are pressed in when the door is shut. No door, switch remains activated. One to fix is take out the fuse for lights.
