There is some basis in science..to that belief. Setting specific and challenging goals where feedback on progress is provided is considered one of the most effective means of motivation. That's why most companies set those types of goals for employees. Goals simpy focus your behaviour on activities that help you achieve the goal while the percieved difficulty of the goal provides a benchmark for the amount/intensity/persistence of effort required.
