You cant read them after 97 Rodger as they disabled it to stop people finding the faults and having them fixed while still under warranty!
True story.

What's the part number for the cherokee pump module? I found one site that says the 97-98 cherokee and grand cherokee pumps are the same unit.

Default Xj Hard Start

Recently had my daughters 97 sport 173,000klics develop some interesting symptoms hard to start and intermittent surging mechanic traced it the following fuel injectors and fuel rail full of a tar like compound also tank removed fuel filters blocked and tank full off the same type of crap so after replacing plugs injector service fuel tank clean and fuel pump and filters hard to start dissappeared but surge cutout still present checked distributor extreme wear in bushes had a new body sent up from poly seemed to dissapear but now have a really strange fault auto wont engage in drive, ok when manually shifted still trying to solve that one.

Second my ride 2001 xj classic 132000 klics started to do the same thing as you described after filling tank from a
garage I dont normally use.Hard to start when cold 3 goes to get it to fire then ran rough.Didnt come right after refilling tank from our normal garage.
Had my mechanics scan test both O2 sensors dead.Replaced but still woudnt fire first go.

Did the same as the 97 fuel injectors were fine tank removed and found to be full of rubbish floating rusty particles and metal , fuel filters totally clogged.Had tank steam cleaned to remove contaminants replaced pump and filters
as we couldnt figure out where all the metal particles had come from.

Contaminated fuel was the obvious answer as to destroy both O2 sensors and clog filters with traces of metal in the tank is not normal.I will be pursuing the oil company from which I purchased the fuel for compo and have tken photos of the pump filters and floaties as proof.

Hope this info helps

Cheers

Ian P

Wow, that is shocking that you could pick up such bad fuel as that!

Hi
the 99xj which I had previously worked on for rego is running fine though is suffering the same hard to start issues previously discussed. Fuel pump seems to work fine when vehicle is driven. Next week I will be fabricating a petrol tank for gas conversion so will check original for contamination as mentioned.
