Why? I love the all wheel drive! Nothing like flooring the V8 around a corner from a standing still

There is, it's called Atlas 2 Rr Hi, 4Hi, 2 Rr Lo, 2 Fr Lo, 4 Lo

The WJ is mostly 2WD anyway until 4WD is needed.

I had mine out while I was waiting on a part for a few weeks, absolutely no difference in fuel economy, only difference was the smoke that poured from the rear on full throttle from a stand still

The 4wd system runs all power to the rear until it notices a slip, then engages the front, if you do notice a difference you probably have significant drag on the drive train somewhere.

Fuel savings, less tyre wear. Only need 4WD in 4WD situations. Would love to install the 6spd auto out of the new Ranger.

Also 10.2L/100 would be very light operation on flat roads. I have found if you drive moderately and a few hills it is more like 11.5L/100.

The manual states that the transmission is dividex constantly 52% to the rear and 48% to the front, until you select 4Low where it is divided 50/50 F&R. I notice it big time when turning a corner, there's not necessarily any slip, but you hear the front tyres biting in. The steering is so direct compared to a rear wheel driven vehicle just like a subaru, pretty sure front wheels are driving all the time.

I recon swapping out the NV245 transfer case with a MP3022 SELEC-Trac II transfer case out of a KK would do the job for you. It has 2WD, 4WD Auto, 4WD Low & Neutral.
Getting the electronics to talk to each other would be the tricky bit.
