If you have a hoist you can do a full change as it requires some turning and burning so wheels need to be free to spin as you go thru the gears in a certain time sequence....
I suspect a lot of auto servicing only gets the dump and run, drop pan and refill actually..
I have always changed my tranny fluid around the 40K mark so by the time it gets to the recommended interval usually 100K mine has had few changes, and I think oil that at most a small percentage might have done 80K is far better than 100% doing 100K.........The ZG, the WG and the Colorado all had that system and never gave a a problem, they did about 280K each.......new pan for WK2 $145, 8 lts of BMV $110 and 2 lts of Penrite aTF FS green label stuff for TC $36............. tranny shop wants a day and $600........ Jeep $1200 I last heard.... some BMV left over for next time.
The magnets and filters catch most of the sludge but the coating does build up all thru the system, changing often does slow it down, cleaner valves means cleaner changes and cooler running.

PS: Most of the box is alloy so magnets only attract the bits of the bearings and valves, the sludge is the worn parts of you box.

hi

You car especially if it is made in the USA is designed to last 150,000 miles aprox 230 -250,000 ks. Anything over that is a bonus. 5 -8years and then why do you want to fix it buy a new one
Did a tech night on autos zfs in ford ,jag, range rover, BMW etc that all the oils had been tested. Sealed for life all but one of the same group specified no need to change. The odd one out was Range Rover with Super charger, but Jag not even though same motor, same company. They know but the bean counters work on the figs. how many will last and how many will be in warranty, if auto lasts 200 ks plus well you had a bad one or towed a lot etc.

Next it is also our fault as consumers as we want extended service intervals. ! remember when I first started changing oil at 10,000 ks both oil and filter WOW.
Till then 3000miles oil, and 6000 miles oil and filter. Fleet vehicles look at service intervals, as it affects lease costs etc.
Jaguar when the XJ40 came out made a big deal of extended and cheaper servicing, and then extended oil changes too 15,000 ks and made a big deal of it as a company car it was cheaper to run.

Many of us buy USED so we want it to last forever.
I used to wreck cars for a living for a number of years, and some makes just wore out evenly so if it was tired everything was struggling, but other makes the engine would last for ever but something else was the weak spot etc .
If one company can make an engine do 500,000 easily then they all can. Same for diff, auto, handling, suspension. Then you would never buy a new car.
Corvettes used to design in a manner so the style would change so by 8yrs time to update, like clothes and shoes etc.
Any way with electric 4wds they will need optional Honda generators so you can get home. New business making brackets to mount your generators.
Cheers Peter

The problem is in Aust Wk2 diesels with ZF 8 speed boxes many are used for towing heavy vans in extremely hot conditions. One thing that buggers all atf fluids is heat.! Yes you may get to 100000 klms but an atf fluid change is still a fair bit cheaper than a new or recon 8 speed ZF box.!

Allowing a vehicle (or any appliance) to last out its full potential is not a good business model for manufacturers.

Many cars are capable of lasting way longer, arguably indefinitely, if you 'cheat' the system. In my book, the first line of combat is to ignore vehicle manufacturer prescribed service intervals. Service the hell out of the car and learn which components are designed to fail sooner than later. It's much cheaper ownership in the long run, especially when realising that a robust servicing and maintenance regimen costs a lot less than repeatedly suffering depreciation on a new car every few years. Suddenly the cost of an extra can or two of oil, fluids and filters each year pales into insignificance.

Extended service intervals and the 'sealed for life' garbage rings alarm bells, loudly.

and going to a dealer, any dealer to buy your servicing material or demanding genuine parts is just a huge waste of money often the same part can be sourced at half the cost, same unit just different package, sometimes not even that....... Buying aftermarket is my only option anyway and my vehicles have never fell apart.

Dead right. And buy 'em when there's a sale on!

backing that up, when i wanted to change the spark plugs in my 3.6 i had to remove the upper inlet manifold, so repco wanted $280.00 for the 6 little gaskets

rock auto it was around $28.00 its been awhile so those numbers may not be accurate but they are close, i wouldn't even bother with a dealer unless desperate

I've kept my XJ running for over 20 years buying from either Morris 4x4 or Rock auto, and occasionally Quadratec. and nothing will change with the WK2

usually takes less that 10 days from the US
