I agree that H/T tyres in most cases will give you better grip but I disagree that they will last longer.
I have had H/T Bridgestone tyres wear out in less then 30,000km but the replacement A/T Coopers (Discoverer's non L/T 70% Road & Sand, 30% Dirt & Mud version) have done more then 50,000km & have 6mm of tread left.
I am confident with the Coopers ability to grip the road, in the wet they clear the water very well, these tyres are on the wife's Grand Vitara and if they weren't safe I wouldn't use them.
As for towing I would choose a L/T tyre (not all A/T tyres are L/T), they have a greater load rating & will tend to give you better wear then a H/T as the tread depth is usually deeper.
