Thanks for the replies. Sorry I havent been here for a few days-busy at work.

Dr W-If it is a leak between radiator water side and transmission oil would I be able to tell if I drain transmission oil and check it (visually). I assume it would be a mix of coolant and oil which would be fairly obvious.

By the way does anyone have a radiator for sale. I will go check out the "for sale" section of the site. I think it needs a new one (as mentioned before I had to plug leak already with Bars Leaks").

If you drain the transmission you find (if it IS leaking) congealed blobs of Tranny fluid and coolant and water and trans. fluid. They don't mix well, but will when hot and then become thick gooey blobs.......Not sure if you can drain just a bit out of your tranny via a drain plug - if you've got a plug then that's good because water will drain out first (heavier than trans fluid) and HOPEFULLY there isn't any water, because if there is it's very expensive fix (full stripdown +rebuild).

Do some searches (on here) for copper radiators, they last longer, cool better and don't cost any more than the problematic aluminium/plastic ones. Heaps of good info on radiators on this site to find cures for XJ's chronic overheating!

Thanks for the reply Dr W.

There is a drain "bolt" on the transmission fluid so I thought I may as well check it out.

I drained two litres of oil out from a cold car.

I think it looks good. It is consistantly "oily" with no sign of water or coolant so that is a bit of a relief.

I am thinking that I will just go ahead and change the fuel pump as this has been my thought the whole time as to the reason for the problem.

I am planning on getting the compression test done within the next few days also just to make sure.

I havent run the car since the issue apart from a few trips around the block and it actually seems to go OK. I am wondering if the engine/transmission needs to heat up for the issue to become apparent which might indicate the Crank Angle Sensor issue I have read about on this site.

Any ideas anyone???

Thanks Again.

Well I have finally found out the issue with the XJ.

There was actually 2 problems - firstly the fuel pump/filter which has been replaced and secondly (the big one) is a head gasket. BUGGER

Had a CO2 test done today and it is not good. Compressions tested OK on all cylinders which is a bonus I guess.

Have to start researching on replacing head gaskets now. Hoping its a job that I can do myself

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions along the way. Possibly stay tuned for another thread on the head gasket drama.

Andrew
