how about one of these...

except with a better power to weight to surface area ratio meaning more power, lighter, bigger tyres - real big tyres. Has to be 4 wheel drive obviously, with small rims and bigger tyres. body can be closed to displace water so it can float, air in big low pressure tyres will help boyancy. When it floats without plaining the centre of wheels are on or above water level. To achieve this wheels retract upwards to make it like a low rider but have ability to extend to give clearance for on land.

Pretty much every 'concept' 4wd I've makes the same mistake - little or no wheel travel.

The wheels/suspension arms would need to be moveable, so you can raise and lower the vehicle's height. This allows for a large amount of suspension travel i.e. flex. Additionally you could lift the suspension arms above the height of the boat tub, allowing it to move smoothly through the water.

As for storage space, good luck on that one. Maybe a Tardis style boot

But wouldn't the fun be lost if we just swam through giant puddles and mud instead of actually driving through them.

Cant see 4WDing through them with an amphibian since we are supposed to drive through them not swim effortlessly.
