It's definitely the muffler and not the catalytic converter?
Agree. You sure it's the rear muffler & not the Cat rattling? The inside of the stock cat breaks up & could be blocking the flow. The second O2 sensor is also in the cat on a 96 so could be interfering there.
Mine was rattly at 5 years old in 2001, I then replaced with a stainless one, so if it's still original it's well past it.

I have a 98 and had the same prob with my exhaust, it was the cat converter. Had new system put in from sump back. Also have the idle issues but only when running on gas! Its fine when I switch it to petrol? The TPS, is that the plate in the dizzy?
Catalytic converter. Yep, thats the one. Forget the muffler, if the sound is coming from there, its that. No big job for any exhaust shop. Had mine done here in Bris, as stated in previous post. Cant recall the price, but I didnt have to eat dry bread for week.
