Have you asked??? Because every mech I have dealt with will take it for a drive for $10 or less. They don't need to dismantle it to give you a pretty good idea on what the issue might be.

Honestly mate, I can't say that. With no idea what the problem is.

As for getting it looked at, mechs will charge by the hour until they find it. In saying that though, any mechanic worth his tools should be able to find a noise like that with in an hour.

My neighbour is a mechanic by trade. Now he works on all the farm equipment localy. I'll take it around when he is back from holidays.

IMO they should be able to have some idea in 20mins. I feel confident that any decent mech would have come across this noise on other cars not just XJ Jeeps.

Check your crank shaft movement at the harmonic balancer. Going from forward to reverse can cause the crank to thrust back and forwards. If is more than spec then that could effect other bits. Can check with a lever at either end.
