If the coolers are at or near ambient temp, I would imagine that the fluid is not reaching them.

Spot on Le Cheese....and the 'drafting' of the lines proves the valve isnt opening......or.....the fluid is not flowing through the cooler....unless a 'muppet' has failed to remove the plastic dust cap on the intake side of the cooler upon installation.....which I highly doubt, as the problem was there BEFORE the aftermarket cooler was fitted....Thermal By-Pass Valve is 'history'.....got to be some in OZ surely ???

Yeh both factory and auxiliary coolers are basically at ambient temp, so what kind of temp should i be seeing on the hot intake side of the cooler? Would it be kind of close to the actual trans temp reading from the car?

That would be correct...the oil on its way to be cooled is the temp the tranny oil is reading(within a poomfteenth...tiny bit cooler cos its outside the box in air flow)....as a side note....those recommended places to call may be able to supply, or put you in contact with a supplier, of the bypass valve.....as always....when we use ebay, or woteva online bits n pieces sales site....our vehicles are NOT listed bcos they werent released in the States....ie: 11-13 Grands on ebay only have the 3.6 or V8, both petrol, versions....no diesels in the US in those years....as I said....best concentrate on the part your looking at....NAG1/W5A580 Tranny...many cars with them fitted....any good tranny shop or even a decent mechanic should be able to fit the bypass valve....can be a DIY if you have the tools n ability....valve is exterior to the box on a cooling line...undo, remove, replace....gonna be messy and suggest you catch what comes out(oil volume) to give you an idea of how much to put back in(via the fill tube)....you could buy an aftermarket dipstick n dip it first, mark the stick, refill to that level....some just use long white cable ties...same method....up to you

Have a look at the lines coming from the box heading to the cooler, if you see a alloy block in the line which the pipes are plumbed through then thats the culprit, the thermo switch inside has jammed, spring broken maybe and all you are getting is a by pass flow, if there is no alloy block in the line near thee box then it could be internal or a line has a blockage... If the box has only been serviced as per the schedule then that is surely possible, these boxes like most need to be done at least evry 50K, preferably 40K as the build up of crud by 100K km chokes them and they need a proper bench strip down............ using a Tranny shop that is familar with Mercs is the way to go as they know their stuff with these boxes like the 8 speeder, tranny shop doing BMWs is the place.

He has had the tranny fully replaced in an attempt by The Dealership to solve the issue....first he had a full service, then he had the tranny n torque converter replaced....its that valve for sure....EVERYTHING else has been renewed !....12k solution (and NOT fixed) for a $200 problem...that doesnt sound like a Dealership at all, does it ?....underskilled thieves

Yep thats totally correct, have done basically everything.
New bypass valve on order, hopefully arrives about tuesday and might give it a try at installing myself.
Was also thinking in the meantime i wonder what would happen if i removed the whole bypass block for now and just run rubber tubing with hose clamps connecting both sides original metal tubing so its just constant always flow?
