Got it done locally (Mt Gambier, S.A.) at Banisters & Sons (a key cutting and shoe repair buisness). It does work to unlock and start the car, its just a bit tight as it is new and not worn on like my original. But I guess it will get easier if I used it a bit more (just use it as a spare/backup).
They seemed to use just an off the shelf type set up to do the job guessing a Silca branded gear. They also gave me my code for the key for future reference

Did you need at least two original keys for the new key to be programmed? Or is this an urban myth? Can anyone elaborate on what is actually programmed if they key is not a remote key, as such?

I only had 1 key, the locksmith firstly put my key into a thing attached to a his computer then he went out to the jeep with another gadget and sat in ther drivers seat and did something then went back and did something back in his shop then I had my new key. He was quite astonished that I didn't even blink when he said the price, I thought it was a bargin compared to the dealer.

Default got the key sorted

I got the key cut some weeks ago and only today had a chance to get it programmed at jeep. The key works a treat. All up it was $50 for they key (postage killed it), $4 for cutting, and programming was $55 at dealer = ~$110. Reasonable compared to jeep genuine key for ~$320 all up. Only downside is no remote, but hey just another thing for the mrs to complain about.

I would definitely recommend this route for anyone who can deal with their 2nd or 3rd, etc. not containing a remote and reasonably priced compared to other options - although still expensive for what it is.

Conceivably, if you broke the key rather than lost it, you could try a Honda trick. Get a normal jey cut & keep the transponder in proximity. This works on at least the Blackbirds, but it was found that you need the key to be connected to the earth for it to work.

Then there are the Kawasakis with a remote that works by proximity. As long as you have it in your pocket, just press the starter. I read about a "lucky" guy who lost his fob in the house... He had an understanding wife. When he was unable to locate it, he ended up wheeling the bike through the house until it would start, that told him he was close. He did find it in the end.

I think it needs to be more than close but actually in the ignition. Remember trying it out once, got a normal key cut so i can have stereo on etc key in and dont have to worry about it driving off, also have the spare secreted away deep in the bowels of the jeep in case something goes wrong and it although relatively close isnt enough to let you start it.
