The jeep then sat for close to 5 months without moving much at all (only to shift the car around a yard) and in this time I had to borrow the battery out of it for the JK (long story) and it wasn't refitted for nearly 5 weeks. Since then 2 codes have come up one for the MAP sensor and one related to the battery. But the hard to start when hot was there after the wiring was fixed
As your drivingstarts out fine then as time goes on you try to accelerate it coughs & splutters, if you turn to accelerate hard it just dies. If you fether the throttle it will wind up to speed but has no power to hold it up the hill. After you let the car sit for a while (because your trying to fault find) you think you must of fixed something as it going ok again & will even rev out sitting there............ then it starts again. until soon enough your being towed back to Jambo the next day.LOL

Yep, that's it alright I'll get the fuel pressure checked out but I'll start sourcing a fuel pump.My dad replaced his a little while ago (which didn't fix his prob) and the pump he took out was a Bosch. His XJ is a 95 and mine is an early 97 with alot of 96 componants.Do you think it's worth trying or should I just buy a new one?

It's free just cost time. However they do dry out after awhile, which can cause them to fail.

Get it out & take it parts supplier. They should be able to match it with a Holden VR/VS pump for cheaper

That's what I was afraid of. But if I can match it up with a Commodore pump that would make life a lot easier

MAP sensor could be causing this and i would be looking there first being you have codes for it (exactly what codes do you have?) the MAP has a large effect on the air/fuel mix (same as O2s) and the signal changes as the throttle plate opens. i have a good used one here for a 96 XJ if you wanna try a cheap $20 fix. even so, get the fuel pressure (AND fuel pump output volume) checked (could be pump, regulator, filter, injectors or crap in the fuel system). beyond that look at the TPS and the other usual culprits. doubt this is a crank or cam angle sensor issue or the car would be stalling and/or not starting.

Thumbs up

i no its a bit off topic but i had a trail bike that would break down a spit and miss at high rpm's and if i went on a long ride it would get hot and spit a miss and splutter all through rev range and speeds till it would die.

you could sit there for half hour trying to start the bastard and no go leave it for 5 mins and it would come right this bike has no efi no fuel pump just a gravity fed carby and i put the problem down to the coil hope this helps it just something else to look into if all else fails hope u get it sorted
