I'd avoid a 96 as it was a transition year,& its harder to find a fsm, and year specific info, unless you find a really nice one.
or you really want obdii with the early interior

I'll second that, I have a 96 and there a bit of a mismash of pre & post parts.

update = cupholders and overhead console superior remote and Immobiliser.

I have a 2000 XJ ...its got a nice interior, I like the rounder edges on the exterior, last of the breed , well nearly they went to 2001... I dont mind the pre updates though...as long as its a 4.0ltr...
