x2 that would be the best way to do it

Yeah I was surprised at that too, but it is the way it was done stock!
Easy way to get a spring lift is add some hangers with bushes.

The Wee Dog might have made the best suggestion ever.
Lots more to swapping the 258 for the 4.0 than un-bolt and swap.
Get all the good bits of the YJ, none of the square lights and special YJ things.
Then put the YJ clip on the CJ and Voila, 1 x YCJ, 1 x CYJ....

I got the YJ home last night and had a better look. There is a shackle hanger on the front axle. Just the back is through the frame. Took it for a bit of a spin and it sputters a bit but should run fine after a bit of tinkering. Sure stays the course better than the CJ did.

I've been pondering a bit about what to do from here. I've got a CJ7 torn to 500 bits down to the bare frame and a YJ all in one piece (so far). I was in the process of building up the CJ, even have the new YJ springs on order then this YJ came up and I got it for a good price.

I should probably start this in a new thread but it raises the question. If I use the YJ chassis and the CJ body is it a CJ or a YJ? Do I need any special engineering certificate to get it registered as a CJ?

Has anyone tried this? I'm almost back to the drawing board as I never expected to find a YJ as a donor for my build up. I was going to use an XJ engine and get the rest of the bits elsewhere.

I'd like to hear from the vet jeep builders here who have buildups. Would you use the YJ chassis? Would a Jeep built from the best of both be the ultimate CJ7?

Too many questions!

I love the old CJ's - but really given the rarity aspect of the YJ in aust I think it would be a serious shame to molest it. I'd vote Keep 'em seperate.

I'd feel a lot worse about raping the YJ if it was in better shape. It's previous owners didn't appreciate what it was. The interior is pretty much trashed and the body would take some serious work to get it straight enough to have a nice paint job. I was looking at the RS top on it and there isn't anything usable there. The guy I bought it from even cut two holes in the bonnet so he could run a bike cable around through the grill to lock the bonnet shut (WTF?). It looks like the heater inside is siliconed together and hangs down into the passenger footwell. I will have heaps of cleaning to do in the engine bay as it looks like the last time is was painted the bonnet was open, overspray everywhere.

If someone was interested in getting a YJ without and engine, trans, doors & rollcage and wanted to build a V8 rockcrawler I could be swayed to use my CJ frame and axles. Otherwise I would sell my CJ frame, amc20, d30 and all the other old bits of CJ.

Does that make sense? In the end all I am after is a ripper of a CJ7 and the rest will be sold as parts.

Isn't the YJ D30 a disconnect axle?

I'd keep the YJ and try to restore it. There's only 10 or so in the country.

theres moe then that, they're just all stashed away in a shed or in a million pieces...

i could probably guarentee that my YJ is in worse condition, but i wouldnt change a single thing on it... a YJ here is very rare, and i'd like to keep mine out there to be seen - hence why i'm slowly getting mine looking and running respectable again.

If you have to tear it apart, use the YJ frame purely based on strength.

Or, restore and build the YJ up for a project , well, thats what I'd do..... i like to be different.
