manufacturer’s widest optional tyre."

It also has some other info in there related to rims and wheels...

Not sure if this is current or something else has superseded this info...

Don't get confused or hung up on that ruling Chumby, it's almost irrelevent in the scheme of things. Tyre width is the last of the issues and plenty of things impact before width is an issue. For example the standard Grand width of 235 can, by that ruling, be replaced with a tyre of 352 width which is totally impossible within other more prominent rules. A Landcruiser could run a width of 412. Heights/diameters and protrusion are the important issues.

And back to the subject of height on Qld it's 15mm full stop, there is no provision anywhere to get a larger tyre engineered unlike some other states.

Guys - as previously mentioned, in NSW it's very plain on what the legal limits are - Get a copy from NSW RTA download page, I would say the RTA counts as the final ruling. Im sure other states have a similar document

Yes, it appears width (within 99.9% of people's needs) won't be an issue. It's track width and overall diameter that matters.

In the case of grands, I'd say that running 245/65/17 standard is 29.5" and going to 245/70/17 or 265/65/17 is 30.5", is hardly illegal or would be standing out to boys in blue.

One final point - Those with 'upcountry kits' (like mine, yepee) were 1" taller to begin with so you'd have a good argument to defend for a larger height over standard which is 18.2" front, 18" rear. Opps, sorry, we're talking tyres here...

Can someone tell me if a NSW vehicle (or any state for that matter) be fined in another state?

Cheers to you Chumby, a very useful thread, thanks for the time and effort. The Geolander AT-S are also available in 255/65/17.

Other questions, does a 265/65/17 fit in the spare tyre well and who does the certification? I am also looking at a suspension lift of 40mm to help fit the tyres, been told that more than 40mm can cause the wobbles.

Hi mikehzz....

Haven't tried but may be able to soon. Check the link below... looks like a 265/65/17 fits but sticks up 1/2 -1/4 inch. Maybe able to get it in deflated?

Default GC with 265/65/R17

Hi all,

Shot of my rig with 265/65/R17 and BFG AT's on with Dynamic Steel Rims 30mm offset.

Clearance is good from the long arms (no rubbing that I can tell), and the tire fits under the rim... so all legal.

Drop about 3/4 inch of height from the Rubi JK standard rims/tires... but the extra track and tire width adds heaps to stability.

Cheers

20's would be illegal at least here in QLD as you can only go up by 2" on the largest that was fitted.
As for tyres sizes and lift sizes here in QLD it is a pain, 15mm is the maximum for tyres but lifts gets very vague as there is no "2" maximum allowed" as it gets down to wheel travel increase and decrease so if you have 100mm downtravel from rest you can only lift the vehicle by 1/3 of that so 33mm.
As for widths yes we can go up by 1.5 times stock but if it fouls on the steering you aren't allowed to adjust steering stops to compensate plus the tyres cannot stick out past the flares.

As for getting pulled over, that isn't the major issue, if you have a crash and someone is hurt or worse and your car has oversized (illegal) tyres then it is unroadworthy and you are in a whole world of trouble (jail)....
