It's really difficult to find something that I like, that is comfortable and has enough room for me (I am a big guy) , that has live axles and good suspension lift options, and a good aftermarket parts catalogue.
The Patrol or LC100 series both fit the mould and they both have a huge aftermarket range. Fitting out the WJ has cost a bucket load more than fitting out a Pootrol or LC because of the very limited range of parts in Australia. Having been stung once by this import or suffer build - I am not going there again.
I have looked at Wranglers, but they are limited in space. But there have been some cool builds I have seen in the 4WD Action mags. I don't know. It's a big decision. The WJ will always be remember though as a tough and fun rig.

Fair enough.
$20k-28k would prob only get you a stock WH Grand Cherokee diesel or XH Commander diesel, but I think you'll be struggling to find a Patrol (unless its older than GU) or LC100 that wasn't a mining vehicle and then mod it to your liking for your budget. Maybe doable if you do all the work yourself.
I know you've prob already thought about all the options etc so not trying to talk you into keeping the WJ, but if you kept it you could re-rear the diffs to 4.10 (or even 4.56 for better towing power) and get some of your economy and power back after fitting the bigger tyres, bar work, and towing. Install a trans cooler for extra security. Not necessary but if you had heaps of spare cash, then upgrade the trans a little with upgraded torque converter and shift kit. You'd prob have a further $3-5k into it and you'd know that its one tough vehicle that'll go anywhere towing your camper trailer also with better fuel economy and power than the Patrol or LC100 diesels.
Also, just curious, what have you done with the spare wheel well? I've always thought it'd be cool to have a long range aux tank installed for longer range (on petrol), but then also have LPG fitted and donut tank in the spare wheel well for cheaper economy around the city, as the WJ is one of the only vehicles that would allow the owner to have both an aux tank and LPG tank.
