Don't mis quote me, I am no advocate of diesel as I drive the petrol and would not want a diesel especially now in light of the new petrol motor but that said you cannot dismiss the inherent advantages of a diesel over a petrol in some situations, that's just the reality it. Petrol cannot match the torque of a diesel and sometimes a bucket load of torque comes in very handy.
I personally if bought another would go a petrol and probably starting to get a little soft around the edges and go an auto

Service intervals for the Diesel is every 10,000km. Timing belt @ 100,000km.
My manual on open road uses diesel on average 9/100. Towing 1.9 tonne 12.5/100 and hours of Off road average 10/100.
I chose the diesel as it bests suit My needs. I'm happy getting on average 800klm to a tank. When I go for a long tour (often on a whim) I can estimate the fuel costs as they do not go up and down dramatically from different conditions of driving.
So for Me I made the right choice.

You are correct, it is the more remote stations that do not supply petrol and not uncommon out there as vast distances between stops but a Simpson trek which is done widely and common would not be an issue

Start with that
Having lived in remote communities throughout Qld I have NEVER seen petrol not being sold. Normally it's in much smaller tank holdings than the diesel and can be limited during flood and wet season conditions. Lived on the Savannah way for 2 years and travelled through hell's gate, Wollogorang, roper river extensively and never had any issues with petrol. Maybe southern states are different.

I have a mate who works with the indigenous communities in central Australia between NT and WA and many places through there only have diesel which is why he only buys diesels for that reason and that reason alone. He recently sold his GQ and picked up a grand Cherokee

Thanks again for the words of wisdom from everyone. I did get a chance to drive an auto petrol yesterday and I was impressed! I would love a crack at driving a diesel if I can, but then again if I decide to make the leap to the rubicon there is only the one option.
