There is of course the opposite explanation... overtightened.

I've seen a few damaged studs on JK's, both front and rear. They don't seem to be particularly good quality. DBOR posted a picture of a handfull of broken studs of a front wheel on their FB page not long ago.

My Nitro axles came with grade 8 bolts which threaded through tapped holes in the axle, so perhaps that's a sign ?

I was waiting till some one suggested this.
its quite likely that the nuts were overtightened at some time in the past & then loosened & re-tightened. This can cause a problem with cracking of the stud & in time it will fail.

The proof is on the alloy wheel have a look at the stud holes if there flogged out its loose wheel nuts if there still standard sized holes then stud failure ,

This seems more like the case here...... Maybe an apprentice went crazy with a rattle gun rather than do it with a torque wrench......

We're all just guessing unless he post up picks of the alloy wheel , could be a few things but we won't know until its investigated . Won't be hard to sus out what went on.

A few years ago I had some tyres installed, a week later, I tried to remove the lugs and one sheared right off because it was just too tight. as mentioned it could have been either too loose or too tight.
I always use a torque wrench and tighten about 95lbs and make sure they are clean too So guys - go check yours now.
