I have had my JK back 4 times now and they still can't get rid of it. Last week they replaced the tensioner, belt and idle pulley. The chirp is still there. Took it back the next day and got the senior mechanic to have a thorough look at it. His opinion is that it isn't the water pump but it is the alternator. The alternator is going to get replaced once a new one has come in from the US.

I have mentioned to them a number of times about the possible water pump, but each time they don't believe it. Ah well. If it does turn out to be a faulty water pump, at least I will have a nice shiny new belt, pulley, tensioner and alternator to go with it.

I am curious though of the financial logic of it. You think it would be cheaper to at least replace the water pump first to see if it gets rid of it. I am sure the alternator is far more costly than a new water pump or water pump seal.

"Are they installing redesigned water pumps or they just replacing them with another faulty unit?"

Very good question... Who knows? You'd hope that they are redesigned units, but my car was only built in January 2013 so how much newer than that could the spare parts actually be?! Could be anything mate, perhaps the water pump on the cars that are faulting are from a particular batch, so you just hope that the new one being fitted is from a different batch with no issues.

Stampie, I have heard of a few people with this issue which were first diagnosed as an alternator fault. For some people it fixed the problem, for others it didn't (and the next step was water pump replacement). Like you say, just think of all the new parts you are getting!! Frustrating though, no doubt.

The water pump has now been replaced. I haven't heard the noise again.

If you read the forums (here and US) this sounds like a very common problem, but I haven't read of anyone actually have a FAILURE of the water pump - it has just been the annoying sqeeks (granted, that will probably lead to a future failure if left unattended long enough). That's why I reckon Jeep aren't doing a total recall, which would expensive. And to put it into context, although there seems to be heaps of people with these issues on the forums, more than 1 million JKs have been sold (with a reasonable proportion with the newer Pentastar), so perhaps the reported complaints aren't really a significant percentage.

But these problems make you tune right into every little squeek, rattle and bump... and send you bonkers looking for problems which aren't there.

You know, some people just drive their cars, without analysing every little thing to the finest detail. Those people enjoy their cars more. I wish I was more like that!

My 2013 Pentastar started chirping intermittently a couple of weeks ago (4500km). Took it to the dealer they said idle pulley. Booked it in with the dealer to get fixed last week, they couldn't get the chirping to happen, they said they would order the idle pulley anyway. Went in today to have the pulley replaced, they then rang me this arvo and now said it's the water pump, they have ordered a new one and should be installed tomorrow.

Will wait and see, also had the MIL light come on 2 weeks ago, dealer said low oil pressure sensor, so ordered that as well and that was replaced today.

Hope this isn't the start of things to come as I've only owned the jeep for 1 month!!

Hope it is all fixed for you guy's soon.
What is it with water pumps and new cars.

Was reading up on the VW GTI forums and the Mark 6 GTI's were needing new pumps from as low as 100km on the clock. Some guy's were on there 3rd pump by 1000km on the clock.
Seems that VW just replaced the one in the car with the same one until the prob went away.
The new Mark 7's have a new design now.

Isn't it hilarious that the dealerships are not aware of this problem yet and still replacing the idler pulley.

Hi guys,

Does anyone have a video / sound snippet of the chirping so I can keep an ear out on mine? Only at 1400 KM's. Good to know the sound in case it happens. Or is it a pretty obvious one?
