For all those guys taking their JK rock crawling on the Rubicon trail? Different terrain here in Aussie mate.

There's a few that have tested and found good combinations between different brands.
It really depends on the type of wheeling you are looking at doing.
This was my first jeep so I was happy to just get a "complete" set up from a shop and be able to deal with them direct with any issues, advice etc.
I'm running the 3" dbor kit on my shorty was called the tourer ultimate. I've always found Bill great to deal with and always happy to help.
offroad it's been awesome and no complaints. On road a little firm but I havent compared it with any others.
I'm sure dbor or others would take you for spin to show you.

More variety of terrains here in Aus. So it really depends what everyone looks for. One interesting thing thou, I really don't see as much mud when I was in US last time. May be I missed something.
I have tried to wheel on my friends JKs with TF and AEV kits. You can feel the difference on road and off road. I would vote for AEV kits if the JK is for daily drive.

For NSW, the 50mm that everyone throws around seems to be a "convenient" figure used across the industry.
In fact the RMS VSI (Vehicle Standards Information sheet - VSI 06) covering light vehicle mods actually says you need engineering approval for -
"Altering vehicle ride height by more than one third of the manufacturer’s suspension
travel in the direction of the ride height change. "
No actual measurement is specified.
So, I guess you'd have to figure is 150mm the suspension travel of a Jeep......if it's more than that, then you can lift more before needing to engineer the JK.

Great to get so much feedback, thanks all.

Seems like most opinions are pro AEV
I'd really like to install the lift myself - does anyone know what the process is to get the lift engineered if I do? Is there a site that documents the requirements?

Alternate is to have it installed. Who are your recommended installers in Melbourne?

I've checked on the Vic roads website.

In the attached documents Vic roads provide the following:

Summary of the Australian Design Rules
Referring to page 10, this document defines four wheel drive vehicles as:
Vehicle Category Code - MC (Off road passenger vehicle)

Guide to modifications for motor vehicles
Referring to page 6, section 13.3
If I understand this document correctly, Vic roads provides 2 options for four wheel drives. Option 1 allows a total of 75mm (3 inch) lift by tyre and suspension without the need to be engineered. There are some conditions around this though, so best to have a read yourself.

Is my understanding of this correct?
