The pinnacle of motoring technology has long past. It has been all downhill since then.
Packard installed the first electric car windows in 1940.
Ford further developed the technology in 1941 but never extended it to the ever popular GPW.
This would have been decided for the same reasons as hybrid technology should not be considered for a Wrangler and the like now...............it would not be practical or taken seriously.

I don't know why we don't focus on Hydrogen powered cars. Easy to obtain, no emissions and good enough for NASA to use in Rocket fuel. The most plentiful resource at our fingertips and a 200 year old technology.

Agreed on the poor IC engines. But it needn't be that way - the Toyota 450h has a 3.4 litre V6 mated to its hybrid power train.

I hear there are many pirus's running around with stuffed batteries, too expensive to replace. just a heavy gutless inefficient POS.
I notice MB have small diesels that kill a pirus for economy. I agree that diesel electric as an alternate to a transmission may eventually be the way to go. Freight trains have done that for a very long time. A elec motor in each wheel hub may be an interesting plan.
Agreed. I really like the idea of independent drive. Hey, it was good enough for the most off-road vehicle of all time - the moon rover!

Sorry - 'Lexus' rather than Toyota. Same difference.

Distribution and storage are a problem, but ones of investment and will, rather than of technology.

Of course, the real problem is that I can make it at home with just a few bits and pieces I've got lying around, and that makes it impossible to tax.

On-site generation. Solar powered, just add water.

and about a month to make a few mm LoL
not to mention how much power it take to gen up the electric rods, and then when it explodes funny how it turns back into water , and oil lubed engines don't like water or in fact RUST is a problem
but as we all sit and think about this and most of us do the best thinking on the throne . and as so much of the crap is around methane anyone ? "wats ya engine powered on mate?" (answer) "SHIT! and the three little pigs"
but if diesel not to worry you could always get the fish and chip oil , filter it , and run a heat line around the exhaust. LoL
