Agree. A mate brought in a second hand 18' Bayliner he bought for nothing and flogged it off rather quickly here. Might pay for all the parts..

Ctually I have read & reread the ADRs and not once have I found this fsbbled requirement.
I have found requirements for:
Follow the shape of the vechicle (how vague is that),
Airbag compatability testing,
Radius requirements on edges, & ends,
Tyre coverage (front/rear/side) - which I suspect might be confused point.
Requirements to meet Aust Standards... which in turn refers to:
- collision testing requirements
- plating requirements (funny the ADR doesn't direct say plating is needed the Standard does ... the ADR just says must meet standards...)
Etc. ..but never found anything saying s bumper must be full width of either the body or tyres......so if snyone has found if I'd be curious as to the specific reference.

Vehicle parts cannot be deemed as personal imports. You have to fill out a form "Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement" and there is a list of items not considered as personal effects. I just bought a 40 ft container in with an 8000 buck fee at the Aus end

Just been thru this fiasco with my Nephews front bar......

- Follow the shape of the vehicle is a big deal at the moment as apparently a motorcyclist got wedged between a bar and the front guard. Not sure which state but in WA a bar supplier here had to supply curved sections to follow the guard to flare radius

- Tyre coverage (front/rear/side) is often used as an issue with the statement made a person can be more easily run over. But the ADR is referring to stopping rocks and gravel getting chucked about, so 'for the purpose of inspection' a mudflap attached to the front bumper is sufficient.

Mind you it doesn't often matter what is written in the ADR, it is the interpretation of the vehicle inspector i.e. you cant argue with a ^%^&^

got pulled over Sunday at Bulga when leaving TuffTrucks, the highway patrol officer said that my spare wheel carrier and gasbottle holder(in particular the gas bottle holder) was not legal, the gas bottle holder is mounted in a way similarto many jerry can holders andI thoughtit would be fine, I was made to remove the bottle from a clamped holder andrope it to my roof rack, seems stupid to me as the holder is much stronger.once the highway patrol officer was finished It was the RMS turn, and they wentover the vehicle and picked me on 33" tyres and the front bar not beingwide enough as a person if hit could go under the wheels and that the bar needsto as wide as the vehicle.
The RMS inspector said I needed a certificate for the wheel size and the front bar, how do I go about this, I have seen many Jeeps with similar front bars and a lot with larger tyres, I'm not too concerned about the gas bottle holder, just reckon the highway patrol was being a prick.

regards
Andrew

Fiasco is exactly the right word.
I've heard abouth the concern of perdestrian/motorcyclst being wedged between bumper and guard. Was once told this by an RMS tech - my response pointed out unless I sm in reverse snd the pedestrian/cyclist runs into the vehicle its technically impossible (the tyres going the wrong direction)
Response was a little dumbfounded and while I have no doubt he would have stood his ground no actual rule refence was able to be quoted. Since it was only investigation I dropped that topic there and moved on.

A stubborn part of me wants to have this "discussion" one day because I sorta hate vague "rules" that get "enforced" by some of the egoistical.

Once you've put all your person stuff in the container measure the available space you have left. Then very carefully CHUCK EVERYTHING BACK OUT and drive in a low mile pre'88 Grand Wagoneer in Spinnaker Blue and call it good.Click image for larger version

Check the import duty and gst rules for importing. I think it's anything over $1000 for the total group of things and not on individual items.
There maybe a benefit if all your items appear to be secondhand and not still in their new packaging.
