A bit further off topic but you get that,,,I finally picked up aWH 3.0 crd QDII, been on the look out for one that i could afford for maybe 2 years. Anyway when i got it i had to leave the old WG crd over 300km away for almost a month, untill i could get busses and a trai n back to pick it up. As nice as the WH is damn I missed the WG, its just the best combination of size, power, etc, etc of any 4x4 I have ever driven,,so glad I got it back yesterday!!! Now if i could just get those WH eLSDs front and rear into the WG wouldnt that be good. Maybe a project for Adrian D,,,,

I get it. I have a love-hate relationship with my WG.

I was recently on some gnarly tracks when a youngster going the opposite direction leaned out of his GU with 35" tyres and huge lift to tell me I'd "struggle" on the track he'd just driven. "Come watch," I beckoned, and proceeded to easily crawl down the hill, turn around and crawl back up with barely any grappling and not even needing a spotter. He was gobsmacked. I love it!

On Fraser Island it spat the front CV on the driveshaft, which ended with me getting towed in 2wd from Hook Point, onto the barge, through Inskip to the bitumen, from where I drove home sans front driveshaft. The tow car was a 79 Series dual cab and got cheers at Inskip. I hate it!

I turn on the Infinity Sound and I love it.

I give it beans at night and see the haze trail in the headlights behind and I hate it.

I manoeuvre into a tight carpark and I love it.

I lift the bonnet to do anything under there and I think, "How can any self-respecting engineer have signed off on this unmaintainable cramped mess?!" I hate it.

I start the engine and listen to the characteristic rhythm of the OM647, and feel how nicely it plays with the NAG1 and I love it. (Only other WG CRD owners will understand this one.)

I thought about a complete rear axle swap and just giving the solenoid 100% duty cycle (been tried before, it is almost like a locker) but for the price I found the ARBs, it was a no-brainer.

Anyway, I truly understand the love/hate relationship, there are always small things to tend to. Pity there aren't so many in OZ, here you can get an engine for under 1k and keep on trucking.

As for pooftrol drivers giving advice, a guy with a Patrol on 33 muds bragged that there was this road on an island in Greece which he barely climbed and if you stopped there was no way of continuing. I went there with road tires and climbed every hill as slow as possible, even stopped for photos .

JeanLuke, I hope you waved at the GU driver after that

JeanLuke get on youtube and look at all the Inskip point vids, heaps of bogged Hilux Landcrusiers Nissans,,bit of fun. Bewarned though some are so funny you really could pee your pants laughing!!! After i fitted the new manifold with all the EGR stuff removed (and swirl flaps removed), the haze you referred to is almost non-existent.As an added bonus the under hood mess is a lot tidier . Adrian D,, HAHA Pooftrol , thats a good one, ive heard of Pootrol but Pooftrol is even funnier!!! Got to laugh at anyone with a ZD30 hand grenade looking down their nose at a Jeep!!! Yes you are right about the ARBs, its just the WH QDIIs work so well switching down so you can turn, automatically on when ever needed, etc. I should just get an ARB on the rear and be done withit. By the way, main reason I wanted the WH was to have a capable towing 4x4, 2.7 crd does a good job towing but the WH 3.0 crd will be great.

The WH is a beast, they are hard to find here registered as utility vehicles (so lower tax bracket), sometimes I wonder why I did not spring for one...

Some haze at night in the headlights is perfectly normal at full boogie in a diesel. Visible smoke when flooring in the daytime is when I would worry about something.

One thing I learned with my old CRD, try to worry less and enjoy more. When (and if) something breaks, fix it, until then, maintenance and for prevention, small items known to fail due to age (like the tensioner, viscous bearing, low-pressure lines, return lines, PCV)

I've had people stop to watch me drive up some stuff expecting I'd fail and they were all very surprised when I drove something hard very easily. They then say stuff like must be heavily modified, I respond with standard tyres, open diffs and a 50mm lift.

I've even pulled a trailer easily up a couple of hills that nobody else could follow me without a trailer.

I love pissing off Prado drivers from the lights too.
