In the early days when I was trying to get a handle on this dip stick I used a universal dip stick, measured against the original, dipped with it to check level, no seal so no wicking up the tube so I knew if it was right, hence the 7.5lts now have it worked out so all good.
NOTE: I think the earlier VM's took less oil than later models so check the book or refill slowly dipping as go after about 5 lts.....

The earlier (MY11-13) takes 8.4l according to the book, the later ones are less. Mine takes around 8.2l to fill. With the engine warm I drain for at least a couple of hours before refilling. Also soak up most of what's sitting in the filter 'well' although that doesn't amount to much.

Same here...mine doesn't use or add any oil, now nearly 190,000kms. I just got back from a 1000km round trip pulling the van, had changed the oil and filter before leaving, the level hasn't moved noticeably.
I have been buying the 7 litre pack then adding 1/2 a litre on top.
I find that works ok and the level seems to sit around the full mark on the stick.
If I put 3/4 of a litre in or 7.7 litres the level seems to sit at the bottom of the springy bit and doesn't really give me a clear reading.

A couple of hours, goodness, I drop the plug and it drains while I pull the filter and load a new one then the bung goes back in, by then its hardly a drip, I don't bother draining out the filter cavity, makes too much mess and if whats left in there is going to contaminate the system then something is seriously wrong somewhere I reckon.... besides if I left it that long I would forget about it and fire the dry engine up or something equally dumb like forget the bung and pour new oil in...

That is true but the less oil you have, the hotter it will be. More oil is always better, whether in engine or transmission.

I use a large plastic syringe to draw the oil out of the filter housing, 15 cents each and throw away, same if I check the M Prop solenoid filter as the syringe plastic is clean. I usually start the oil change process by removing the oil filter syringing the housing then putting in the new filter and replacing the cap and then underneath to drain the oil. I do take off the oil filler cap to facilitate the oil draining quicker, saves getting under the car twice, I have a little snooze on the creeper for a few minutes while it drains or maybe I should say I inspect the underneath for any problems or leaks lol

Remember these VMs must be left for fifteen minutes at least before start up after an oil fill so as enough oil van get down to the sump.

I agree...I upgraded my previous 5.7L Hemi GC engine to a larger Z9 oil filter from the standard Z89 filter...why Chrysler insisted on fitting that puny little Z89 on the 5.7L I'll never know...it did give another 1/2 a litre of oil capacity to the engine as well as a much larger filter area.
Too bad we can't do a similar thing with the VM....
