Well you are lucky having a wet acid battery under your bum, sulphuric acid so it vents hydrogen, easy to go BOOM, the gas will also corrode and eat whatever it lands on, might need a spray of vinegar if you see any powdery stuff .............. idiot that suggested such a battery but can't blame them as so many listings say a calcium is okay, I think some manufacturers don't realize the 3lt WK is not the same as a 3lt WK2 ........ If you look at the pic in my original post that is the base line specs for the battery in regard to power etc, a DIN85LH AGM is a good place to start for sizing, online cats are not reliable..........

Think his is an XJ mate...under the bonnet job ????....not legal to run a 'wet' battery inside a car in OZ for the exact reasons you mention...must be an AGM or Lithium job...if its not...get it out !!!!!....playin 'Russian Roulette' with a wet cell battery inside a car....acid leaks, toxic fumes or KABOOM are the outcomes....not for me !!!!....GOOD time to observe the rules right there !

ps: you couldnt get a wet cell battery into or out of ours without spillage in any case....cant happen

Lead/acid batteries have Sulfuric acid in them. Hydrogen is vented in the charging process especially when the battery is over charged.

Ok just to clarify the lead acid battery was in my WK2 it was supplied by REPCO as the appropriate replacement for the car.

i didn't have enough experience with this particular model to argue.
it did have however a sealed top and a vent hole that was connected. i never once smelt any fumes in the car

i NOW have an AGM battery as i have taken the time to research this, primarily due to having a dodgy radio draining the battery, it would go flat after 3 days of non use.

and yes i still have my XJ which i have now had 26 years, its a built 1993, sold in AU 1994 450,000km and going great , battery not an issue for the XJ

loosing all sorts of fluids however was (up until recently)

now no more drip tray yea!!

its rocker cover was leaking, its sump gasket was leaking, the rear main was leaking, the front harmonic balancer seal was leaking,

over many years i think everything has leaked and been replaced multiple times.

at least though is fairly easy to work on with a 2.5 inch lift

the WK2 not so much

hope that helps
