Should be a tag attached to one of the diff cover bolts stating it is and needs a LSD additive in the oil. I wouldn't worry about it too much as they tend to wear out after 100,000 kms anyway and it is cheaper to put a much better and strong Detriot Tru-Trac in it's place.

I thought (but I own a TJ!!) there was only one model that came out without LSD - can't remember other details, but I think the model came with a chrome grill??

Someone probably knows............

The chrome grill model seems to be the 1995 (August onwards) Limited Classic and Sports Classic.

However, according to Redbook.com.au they did come standard with a limited slip diff.

So I'm a bit unsure why some supposedly didn't come with the LSD.

GoJeep, how strongly do you feel about not buying a 1996 model due to the vibrations if I boost it?

There seems to be a lot more 96's advertised than 95's. Any more information on this "vibration issue" including how bad it is, and how quickly it crops up with lengthening shocks, would be appreciated.

Is there anyway around the issue on a 96?

Thanks,
4WDMan

I bought one of the last XJ limiteds (07/97). We had the option of a classic limited or sports. These had chrome grill, nudge bar, w/grain trim, & c.d. stacker at no extra cast. BUT no L.S.D. ( No such thing as a free lunch remember). After I fitted sport rear springs a slight vibe was evident at 95 - 120 kmh. this was eliminated by reshaping the x-member & this became a ritual after every off-road trip. I removed the transmission crossmember & bent it in a press to lower the centre where the transmission mount fits approx 15 - 20 mm. If I had kept the car long enough I would have fabricated a custom x-memeber that was stronger & didn't bend every time we belly flopped the car.
HTH.

The 96's are still alright to lift, it is more the 98 on that are harder. All can be fixed with a slip yoke eliminator kit though. You just miss out on the power/economy switch for the auto. I find that it is great to use in power mode when wheeling or towing as it shifts earlier. They are a little better on economy as well when left in economy mode which I run in the rest of the time. The 96 in some where in between the two settings.
How much lift are you thinking of? Even 98's cope with 2" with the right cheap adjustments made. You should get 3" out of the 96 - 97 but not the 4.5" that I have from what I have worked on unless you spend more money on SYE's as mentioned before.

I guess it's just a matter of keeping the options open to give it as much lift as I can.

Your mention of the power/economy button is a good point, as they can be a bit thirsty from what I hear. It's nice to be able to select how much power/fuel you want to burn in a given situation.

Well, thanks for all the info. Looks like the 95 (Aug+) has some good advantages, over the others, and some nice extras like chrome grill, better mags, nudge bar, sports seats, and CD stacker.

Now I just have to pray that one will come up in GC/Brisbane.

Thanks guys,
4WDMan
