I knew there is a reason I never take my cars to mechanics!

im in chris...thanks mucho! as far as the lower temp t-stat goes...it IS crap...out of lack for time to find the proper unit ive run the 180 unit until i could come across a proper stat...it cools no better and everything gojeep sez about it is true and i will back that up...the prob with running a 180 stat is that the computer will always think you are in cold start up mode or 'open loop' and will enrichen the fuel flow to compensate (as it should)...once the engine warms up the computer will continue to assume its in cold start up mode and will keep lengthening the injector pulse ultimately decreasing your fuel consumption and might even set a code in the computers memory (ive written this few times now?) lol....look guys...stick to a 195f stat...keep the computer happy...u gain nothing by running a cooler stat...if you have probs then there is some other issue to blame...restricted radiators are a prime culprit as is the very nature of the thermodynamics of the xj - they have a natural cooling inability by design...so do some things to help that: make sure your radiator is nice an clean inside and out....keep your thermo updated every 2-3 years...make sure yer water pump is proper (no leaks, no corrosion), run 1/3 antifreeze to 2/3 water in the system and flush it every year...make sure you have NO leaks...vent your engine bay....install an electric fan...wrap the exhaust manifold in Thermo Tec to keep the exhaust heat level down...wrap the fuel rail and injectors with the same to prevent vapor lock during hot soaks....install a cold air (or ram air) intake system (avoiding K&N type filters which soak up dirt and water and mud)....best thing u could do is put a cowl induction hood on to alleviate underhood temps (see gojeeps website)....this vehicle was never designed to run a straight six and thus the problem - too much heat soaked material under the hood...it means you have to help it by doing some things to get the temps outta there...there are lottsa threads about this on here if u look...i will say this: the condition of overheating an XJ is probably the biggest hurdle these owners have to face...so do something about it as there are lots of ideas here

Go Jeep,

Thanks as always for your extremely informative advice. I just did a conversion from celcius to Farenheit and 91 Celcius is 195 Farenheit and according the following post of yours, that would mean that I am running the correct thermostat?

You must run a 195*F thermostat. Any less and the ECU will keep you running rich and not even read the O2 sensor! Also you are wearing out your engine at about 4 times the rate right now too.

Just checked and that is right. For some reason I thought 195*F was 96*C but double checked the factory service manual and is states a 195*F or 90*C, which would have been rounded down. Sorry for the miss information but so used to working with US sites that I am loosing my metric knowledge for engine temps!
