Darby if the oer 2.5 early 2.8 type is self primimg how does that go with bleeding the air out of the system, on the LOST site they are always talking about lifter pumps and viewing glass and pressure bleeders to stop the air, would it not make sense to just install one of these older types that is (sorry to say self priming, better technology).. Just a thought but I could be wrong.

Damo, suggest you don't just go ahead change the filter and crank the engine. Been out having a play and have found that the large white knob on top, when unscrewed is actually a plunger so would suggest that this is the primer.
I am at present getting hold of a filter wrench to undo the filter, once done I will simply follow the procedure for the 2.8, just have to work out which is now the bleed screw. The white screw driver head or copper bolt. The filter didn't drain too well until both were removed.

Cool keep me informed as I am not at that stage yet. Today I had my auto gearbox serviced, mechanic said it was good no dirty fluid or crap in it. So a good bill of health now I am less stressed about what condition it is in.

Filter changed, primed and all good. Simply follow the instructions as listed for the 2.8. I ended up pumping up as it instruction states and cracked the plastic screwdriver head fitting. You can physically see the air expel and then do it up again. I did this 4 times (pump and then bleed) until no visible signs of air was present, just diesel.
Cranked it over, fired straight up, stumbled for a second and kept running.

Job done.
