If you've never used a DSLR before they can be a bit daunting at first and you'll prob find yourself just using the thing on 'auto' mode all the time. If you're a amateur photographer, a top of the range 'point and shoot' might be the way to go. I have a Canon G10 (G11 is out now, but it's not as good) which is still classed as a point and shoot, but its knocking on the door of DSLR quality without the interchangeable lenses and is considered the ultimate DSLR companion when pros want something less bulky.

Personally have Olympus. I like them, but others are good in their own ways.

If you like the Sony, then do some research, try it out and go for it.

I personally use Nikon DSLR, I had a D50 for a few years and now use a D300. I'm happy with both. The Canons are also good value for money. I'd recommend the entry level DSLR of either Canon or Nikon. Look for the best deal with 2 lenses. Who ever can give you the best deal,go with that one. The wide angle and zoom lens offered with both makes will cover you for everything that you want to shoot. Dont be swayed by megapixels either. The quality of a shot has more to do with the quality of the lens. And 6 megapixel photo's will blow up to A3 size and still maintain it's quality without being too pixelated. Happy hunting!

Looking at a Sony Alpha tomorrow which apparantly is a Pentax rebadged with some extra mods. Had two lenses and 1gb card and two batteries for $480. Not to bad i hope.

I think it all comes down to what type of lens you have on the camera.
Speaking to some of the Pro photographers, it is the lens that makes the difference not the camera body. But then again it comes down to personal choice etc.

I have a canon 400D (entry level stuff) but with a L series f2.8 70-200 IS Telephoto lens and it takes some fantastic photos.

The lower the F number, the better the lens is in low light conditions.

Looks like not a bad buy Jimmy, two batteries is a bonus.

If you get it and what some lessons give me a buzz, more than happy to show you a few SLR tricks and tips.

Sony Alpha's are actually Konica Minolta's not Pentax. Konica Minolta championed the Alpha (lens mount) with the Dynax/Maxxum series of camera's before being bought out by Sony. They went broke after losing a lawsuit to Honeywell. Something about stealing autofocus designs and such. But I digress....

The short version is thus. Sony bodies are top notch with most of the tech coming from Konica Minolta back in the day, small things like autofocusing when you cover the eye piece are Minolta ideas they still use today. The kit lens that comes with the current Sony Alpha kit are a DT series lens, usually 18-70 and 70-300. To be honest they are not doing the camera's much justice with the kit lens. Upgrade to Konica Minolta's old autofocus series of lens's as they are FAR superior in image quality and second hand ones are easy enough to find for a good price. I'm still using minolta glass thats in the area of 15 years old with my Sony Alpha and getting good results.

Good Buying in my Opinion.
