Just got a verbal quote from Albion Jeep for replacing the timing belt, pulleys and tensioner - $1700, split roughly $1000 parts and $700 labour.

Parts from VM in the UK, at 55p to the A$, work out to be $348, so even allowing for postage it will only be around $400 or 40% of the Australian stealership price. Although it is probably unfair to blame the dealers as Jeep Australia set the parts prices.

Looks like an opportunity for a group buy to keep the shipping costs down (and maybe get a bulk discount on the parts).

Even though I will not need to replace my belt for another couple of years, my warranty does expire later this year, so I might jump on a group buy as well. I guess I can be sure they will never be cheaper or easier to get.

The dealership quote is on the money. The parts prices are a killer. By memory the tensioners were about the $300 mark each 18 months ago. The dealer will by selling the parts at trade to try and make some money out of labour on this job. They ask 2 days for a good reason, You are not the only job they will have booked in that day and they need to have work booked to keep all the techs busy. If you are there early you will have your car back on the same day if there are no further problems found once the timing belt is removed ie water pump. Any tech that can do the job in 4 hours properly would have had a job with me in an instant.
