i see that most people who are recommending out of the two i put up say the Subaru. is it really that much better? From the research ive been doing (all on paper of course) this is what ive found:

they both run a 4 cylinder which is cheap to run

The Patriot uses about 1L more per 100km (on paper) and comes with all power just like the suby.

Parts for both are expensive with a crash

insurance for the Jeep is $14,00 and the suby is $12,000 with AAMI (to answer that dudes question about it costing around $3500)

and to all the people out there saying to leave my missus, this thread is not about that. beleive me, if i thought i was under the thumb by a taskmaster i would straight up bail. and i have been saving for something like this for a while now, as we already have our own place.

Do Jeeps (Patriots to be specific) often break down?
are they known for having faults?
Are Jeeps not a trustworthy brand?
What is this "TJ" and "XJ" you talking about?

i was lead to beleive that the 2009/2010 models were in good nick and would not break down.... but people always say things about SUVs. 4WDs breaking down...

thank you again for all the input. much apprecited
Half of them are just jealous as they've got faces like smashed crabs and couldn't get a women if they tried. The other half probably can't remember what a women who doesn't sag in the vital areas looks like.
Honestly drive both and see what you and your better half like the most. Treat them right and service them properly and they both should be pretty much trouble free. It's a shame your budget can't stretch to New freelander or one a year old as these are truly exceptional offroad for a softroader and give alot more adventurous 4wd a run for their money.

dont buy a car with ur girlfriend.. crazy stuff at 21
your in a long term commited thing, thats great, but start with buying a plant togeather first, then maybe a fish.

why not get a nice Tj for yourself (her ofcourse aswell) costs approx 15-18k
then buy her a toyota corolla for 10k. reliable, great re-sale, good on fuel, go like a rocket.

i personally really like the jeep compass... just a little smaller than the patriot, but looks cooler imo.

i'd go with what aaron says. buy two. get a jeep tj (wrangler) for all your exploring, and then a cheap buzz box for around town like a yaris or something.

A family member is on his second Suby outback and seeing some of the drama's he has had I fail to see how it could be better than a Patriot.
At your age, ask yourselves if you need a new sedate suv or a runabout and a weekend fun machine.
I have bought three new Jeeps as well as a variety of Jap 4X4's and sedans and I will be sticking to Jeeps from now on. Parts, servicing and reliability are no different to anything else, the difference being that Jeeps are not so HO Hum (boring)as the Japs.

What about a mondeo wagon, stylish, stacks of room and an all round better car than anything mentioned so far.

Mate Suby's can be VERY expensive. Go with the Patriot if buying new. Go with a Freelander 2 if going second hand. Itll be worth every extra cent.
