water pump idler melt-down
Driving my WG home this evening, heard a soft knock noise under the bonnet and then felt like I drove over something small on the road. A few seconds later I could hear a squealing belt noise so pulled over, popped the bonnet and saw that one of the idlers had gone with the back of the serpentine belt running on just the bare bearing that remained. Easy fix, just remove the belt, still daytime just so no need for lights and only about 10 kms to home no worries!!
I pulled out onto the road and nearly threw my shoulder out...... oh yes that belt also drove the power steering. About 2 kms further dash lights up and alarm goes off, temp gauge reading right at the red mark so pull up immediately with steam coming out from under the bonnet. Pop the bonnet then it dawns on me..... that pulley also drives the bloody water pump. Doh!!!!
To cut a long story short(er) with 20 min breaks in between I was able to hop-scotch home in 1.5 km intervals. about six stop-starts and each travel with lights on dark by now with no alternator and battery still fired strong for last start up so happy with the battery.
Of course this all happened the evening that my wife was at work, my two boys at home on their own, my mate who owns a car trailer is out of town, my brother who is vehicularly challenged (read didn't get his license until he was 38 and after 4 years I still fear for my life when in the car with him) so not prepared to risk him towing me, and the night before I have to be at my new truckie job at 3.45 tomorrow morning!!
I finish at about lunchtime tomorrow and have arranged to borrow my brother's car so hopefully I can get that idler in a generic brand from Repco or the likes, otherwise will have to hope Mackay Jeep has one coz can't be without the car at my new job.
An afternoon I'd rather forget.
