i am now a GQ hater, used to be a lover.

All compared to xj:

cons:
really dodgy electrics
NO power
no AWD option
prone to rust
more expensive to maintain
THIRSTY (yes, the xj uses less petrol than the gq does in diesel)
prone to overheating (hates the Toowoomba range-bubble bubble)
rougher ride (because of those wonderful D11 diffs).
every man and his dog owns one.
expensive to service - tappets every 5000, needs about 11 litres oil

pros.
Bigger
every man and his dog owns one (parts, but you will need them)
simple (Ladas are always breaking down, but are simple to work on)

by all means get one, as it is only my preference/opinion, but don't wear those rose coloured glasses when considering one.

pull ya spark plugs 1 by 1 and see what the carbon build up is like if a plug is clean as, with no carbon deposits its a good sign water is getting in the cylinder, water will clean and shine a cylinder head and spark plug of carbon buildup.

I agree, It's a bit like saying an F250 is faster than an F1 racer because it can fit a bigger engine...

Hahaha I like that one
I love F250's I was actually looking at a 1987 effy, with a 7.3 was a monster but for my work is overkill, and I mostly wanted an offroader, don't get me wrong she would of been alright Offroad, but you'd have to jack it so high to overcome that 5 miles worth of wheelbase

I considered a GQ, but capability per dollar, nothing comes close to the cherokee.
And mine has been more reliable than 2 of my mates GQ's for that matter

Here here. I keep up with the locked and lifted boys in the Patrols. Sort the jeep out maye with the head gasket. No need for a motor change. I am an ex patrol boy too and had the chits when i got my xj and it overheated. It was a run down neglected cooling system. Got it all sorted now and i lurve my chokee. Bah! Go back to a patrol? Fix it ya wally and get out there and have a great time in it. If ya gunna buy a patrol you can get back in your box until i let you out. I have not broken a single thing yet on my xj nor dented it due to picking the right line and moderation of that right boot and asi said i have wheeled with the patrol boys and had comments of how the xj goes compared to mega rigs. Some things i must say that are absolutely absurd or comp truck material i wont do but i am sure you get the picture. A lot of people under rate the cherokke but.......yeah. Just fix it and get out there. And NO you cant come out of your box yet.

Hope you got the clearance and gearing for those 35's or you might be doing more harm than good by squeezing them under the XJ....
