ok so the next logical thing would be the viscous fan coupling to replace. These are very hard to test and can give some of the symptoms you have described. When driving on the highway the air can be enough to keep the temp down but add a little more load such as an incline and the fans inabillity to work properly will cause the temp rise. Stopped in traffic no airflow and faulty coupling will almost certainly cause a temp rise. Unfortunately it seems pretty obvious that the gasket has blown so you'll have to replace it and do the fan also as it appears you are happy with the other items. Hopefully it has only spat out a peice of gasket and not warped as it appears you have spent enough money on the old girl.

my thoughts exactly dhard. fan clutch is the only weak link left.

didnt replace earlier because it passed the fsm test. even so, its days are numbered, will be replaced with the head work...

thanks everyone, apologies for the whinge

will report back on proceedings as they happen.

cheers

It boiled on us not long after we got it. put it down to a broken thermostat housing flange. Replaced the housing and was ok for a while, but kept hinting that it wanted to heat up. Plus all the reading of overheating XJs got me paranoid. I also found some other probs eg, bushes, tie rods, seals etc. Normally I'd do the work myself but recently Ive had short term memory probs and become bloody unko. eg. checked ball joints etc and forgot to tighten up the wheel nuts. Made a horrible noise so I decided it would be safer to have a pro do it. Some stuff was priced well but other stuff was plain robbery. Decided to get everything done in one hit.

cheers

wonder if it boiling was the start of the head gasket going and possibly why it ran hot till the head gasket really let go?
