That is similar to the bike experience. It was then found that the key shaft had to be electrically connected to the bike ground. Once that was done, it worked. Also, on my bike, the detector coil is in the key surround, so it really does need to be close.
Actually, now that I think a bit more, the person had been working on the bike & had the lock body unbolted from the bike & found that it had to be earthed.
