I think any Xj is great prefer the post update though.
I think look for one in good condition with some sort of service history.

More fun to be had in 2wd when on the sand (dunes, etc) and overheating is less of an issue than it is in low 4wd. I frequently visit Stockton and as long as tyre pressure is below 14psi, have never been stuck.

Any Xj is great, personaly prefer the styling of pre update models + light weight rear tailgate. But what suits you and fits like a shoe is the one

I have found most service parts to be fine, but I had to visit 4 auto stores to get 5 spark plugs. Then I still had to order the sixth one.

For what you want it for Jazz, I would get one.

Many thanks to all who took the time to reply to my query, and yes, I still plan to go ahead with the purchase. I plan to do most if not all work (excluding machining / welding) myself, having previously owned a Kombi, that required both cylinder head(s) and gear box work, but was good for many years after that. Oil temperature was the limiting factor with this, but now I need to look into what the best method of monitoring coolant / ATF / whatever temp in the XJ is. Regards, Jazz.. (hope this goes to the right place !!)

nothing wrong with the pre-update OBDI cherokee
has been alot of fun with bugger all going wrong with it.
I do know that when my perents had there '96 it had alot of probs with water pumps (atleast 1 a year) untill my brother barrel rolled it down a bank.
Ive been using the '96 as a parts truck for my '94 and I havnt seen any differences in it yet, except nicer seats
