Lost me there, if you cant swing it open because someone has parked close how does the side it's mounted on matter?
Oh, looks good
Cheers

Hi JJ,
I am continuing to follow your progress with much interest.
How much back & forth flexing of the wheel are you getting when its in the locked position?
Could it vibrate & cause problems?
I can see you have put plenty of thought into your project !!!

My point is if someone parks close behind you say roughly the length of the swig away's legnth when you open the swingaway it is impossible to get into the rear from the footpath as you have a barrier blocking your access.....

There is some flex but not a whole lot but that shouldn't pose too much of a problem as this is built for highway use not for offroad use, I certainly wouldn't use it if I was doing a trip to Cape York, besides I couldn't anyway because I would have my trailer hooked on the back and the tyre would be on the roof....

JJ,
I was planning on having a stronger unit specifically so I could avoid putting the spare on the roof.
Basically you have nailed it with your design, but I am considering using square section rather than rectangular with some sort of extra upright stop to help with back & forward stiffness.
There was a commercially made one on ebay last week (it made just over $400) that I went & looked at. It appeared to be stiff enough. It was made of 2 tubes with a flat plate welded between. The pivot didnt look beefy enough though. I guess if the lock latch & rest supports are strong enough, the pivot doesnt need to be super strong.
