AND to add to what SeaComms is saying, your also blinding other drivers with HID globes in standard reflector installations unless the light only shines out of the top of the reflector...
Well i tried to find a diagram...but failed!

Actually most of the H4 HID "upgrades" now do feature a moving cover to shield the lower half of the 'globe' entirely so that on low beam only the top half of the light fitting is illuminated. The problem is the optics of the top half of the stock hella light are not designed fantastically and will scatter some of the light making them still brighter above the cutoff line than standard globes. However, if you stick to 35w 'globes' and not the stupid 55w or 75w I have seen advertised recently then they are not 'too' bad, though still illegal. I should point out that I am running the 35w HID 'globes and I am very happy with them, though not legal and I run the risk of being booked. I have driven in front of it and oncoming toward it and I am satisfied its not to blinding / distracting, but still, not legal....

I have seen plenty of cars around Sydney with aftermarket HID inserts that are quite bad, but never seen one pulled over for it.

(I have a 35W HID in the low beam of my bike, but it is a separate low & high beams. By comparison, the high beam with standard 55W halogen globe is almost invisible. I don't use the HID in the high beam due to the turn on delay to full brightness and having to go off-on all the time for oncoming traffic.)
