Of course the $500 fuel difference is to my current usage with the Commodore. I currently average 13-15lt/100km around town. With a CRD Jeep I'd expect to average around 9lt/100km around town. So there's probably a $500 saving over my current usage. Plus Diesel in Sydney doesn't seem to fluctuate in price like petrol does. I've been watching it the last few weeks and when petrol hits nearly $1.50 per litre, Diesel is still down at $1.30 a litre.

So the real fuel different between the CRD and the V8 would be $1000+ PA.

But of course there are none currently for sale in Sydney for a reasonable price. If the one currently for sale in Melbourne was in Sydney I think I would buy it.

FWIW, mine does 10.8 around Sydney, and yes I have a bit of a heavy right foot. Once I get it on the highway it will drop to 8.5 and towing a trailer (<1000kg) at the speed limit I don't see any worse than 10l/100.

Diesel is a good price at the moment, but it won't stay that price. It will soon cost over $100 to fill up again.

Through in a major repair and any savings go out the window real quick.

I'm not saying don't buy one, just make sure you do it with both eyes open.

Do some research of potential problems before you buy one.

Bloody diesel and petrol up here in sunny Qld are generally about the same price so we only get the saving of economy not price which narrows things a bit especially with the traditionally higher diesel servicing costs.

I reckon I'd struggle to get $8k for my CRD.

Really? That's not the prices currently being offered and sold. There were two CRD's in late May for sale around Sydney, both with $9900 on em, they both sold relatively quickly, both at dealers, one I know sold for $9,500.

Missed out on a 2003 V8 with 125K on it, dealer again, they wanted $8,900.

Several V8's currently for sale private around 150K, all asking around $8-10K, probably get something for around $7,500 / $8,000.

One thing that is concerning me though, I'm seeing a few listed with replacement or rebuilt engines. And these are low km vehicles (112K & 140K). Are the V8 engines really as reliable as suggested?
