This is basically what a very reputable Jeep mechanic (who is a vendor on these forums) told me over the phone when I was buying some parts from him. Not that the 3.8 has been without its own problems however I've not regretted buying one of the last 3.8s. It tows my camper quite well and will sit easily on 110 when doing so. Just don't expect to pass anything going up hills

I've got a big dog 3.6 JK overland with 70,000, didnt care which motor i had because wanted the luxury features, but 35's, auto, stock gearing 4.5" lift with all uneek bars sliders and roof rack, drift drawers and fridge on board at all times is about high 13's and 15.6 to 16's carrying my work trailer as a daily, a lot better on fuel than my land cruiser and patrol 4.2 diesels surprisingly, although its not a rocket

Shortly after buying my 3.8, I started to regret not spending the extra dough on the VM option.
Then the 3.6 come out and I then wished I had waited a year for it.
Since then I have had a lot of contact with other JK owners and this forum and have come to realize that I have had bugger all issues with my Jeep and nothing with the engine at all after 80K, unlike others with a seemingly endless string of horror stories concerning the other two.
The only really consistent complaints with the 3.8 are fuel economy and power issues, both of them I am happy to live with now.
Overall, I feel that mine actually performs pretty well for what it was designed to do.

I bought the 2015 CRD auto new. I had done a fair bit of research on the two engines. The V6 was good, but the CRD was impressive. Heaps of low end torque which i believe is best suited for a 4x4. Also it's tbe same CRD that is in the new Colorado. The ute market is by far the biggest in commercial vehicle sales. Very stiff compertition between all brands. For Holden to choose an engine foe the colorado that doesnt keep up with the competitors would not be a wise decision. So when u drop the CRD into a Jk, you get a very good strong & hopefully reliable truck. There are more colorados sold than jk's, so in time there will be plenty of knowledge and info about the 2.8 CRD. I belive its a strong well made engine that is as good as any other CRD on the market. The V6 will not hold its value as well as the CRD. As far a servicing costs go, it depends on where u take it. I have only done 20k in mine, & i have found the service costs more than reasonable. I own several vehicles in my business, and i can say that the diesel vehicles generally cost no more to maintain than the petrol.
